LOCTITE 408 LOCTITE 408

Main features

  • Low-Odor Low-Blooming Bonding
  • Very-Low-Viscosity Joint Wetting
  • Rapid Porous-Material Fixturing

Product Description

LOCTITE 408 is a one-part, very-low-viscosity alkoxyethyl cyanoacrylate instant adhesive for rapid bonding of metals, plastics, elastomers, and absorbent materials. The transparent liquid cures with atmospheric moisture and is formulated for low odor and low blooming where vapor control is difficult. Fixture times are under 5 seconds on aluminum, neoprene, nitrile rubber, ABS, phenolic, leather, and paper at 22 deg C and 50% relative humidity, while other substrates require longer. The adhesive also bonds porous materials such as wood, paper, leather, and fabric. Its low viscosity suits thin, close-fitting joints and rapid assembly.

Key features

  • Low-Odor Low-Blooming Cure: The formulation reduces odor and blooming where vapor control is difficult.
  • Very-Low-Viscosity Flow: A 4 to 10 mPa s viscosity suits thin, close-fitting bondlines.
  • Porous-Material Bonding: Applications include wood, paper, leather, and fabric as well as metals, plastics, and elastomers.

Applications / Suitable for

  • Rapid bonding of metals, plastics, and elastomers
  • Bonding wood, paper, leather, and fabric
  • Low-odor, low-blooming assembly

Specific Gravity
Specific gravity (SG) is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance; equivalently, it is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the mass of a reference substance for the same given volume. For liquids, the reference substance is almost always water (1), while for gases, it is air (1.18) at room temperature. Specific gravity is unitless.

Thermal Properties
Glass Transition Temperature (Tg)
The glass transition temperature for organic adhesives is a temperature region where the polymers change from glassy and brittle to soft and rubbery. Increasing the temperature further continues the softening process as the viscosity drops too. Temperatures between the glass transition temperature and below the decomposition point of the adhesive are the best region for bonding. The glass-transition temperature Tg of a material characterizes the range of temperatures over which this glass transition occurs.

Thermal Conductivity
Thermal conductivity describes the ability of a material to conduct heat. It is required by power packages in order to dissipate heat and maintain stable electrical performance. Thermal conductivity units are [W/(m K)] in the SI system and [Btu/(hr ft °F)] in the Imperial system.

Viscosity
Viscosity is a measurement of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Viscosity is commonly measured in centiPoise (cP). One cP is defined as the viscosity of water and all other viscosities are derived from this base. MPa is another common unit with a 1:1 conversion to cP. A product like honey would have a much higher viscosity -around 10,000 cPs- compared to water. As a result, honey would flow much slower out of a tipped glass than water would. The viscosity of a material can be decreased with an increase in temperature in order to better suit an application

Electrical Properties
RoHS Compliant
RoHS is a product level compliance based on a European Union Directive which restricts the Use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS). Products compliant with this directive do not exceed the allowable amounts of the following restricted materials: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), with some limited exemptions

VOC-Free (100% solids content)
VOC means Volatile Organic compound. VOCs are evaporating molecules and are literally everywhere around us. Our scents are volatile organic compounds, most of the things that we smell are VOC etc. So what do we mean when we state that a product is VOC free? A VOC free product, according to the FTC is one where: 1)VOCs have not been intentionally added to the product. 2)The presence of VOCs at that level does not cause material harm that consumers typically associate with VOCs, including but not limited to, harm to the environment or human health. 3)The presence of VOCs at that level does not result in concentrations higher than would be found at background levels in the ambient air.
