Main features

  • Kapton Polyimide Backing
  • High-Temperature Silicone Adhesive
  • -73 to 260 deg C Use Range

Product Description

3M™ Polyimide Film Tape 5413 is an amber, 0.07 mm (2.7 mil) tape constructed with DuPont™ Kapton® polyimide film and silicone adhesive. It is used for printed circuit board solder masking and other high-temperature applications. The dimensionally stable polyimide backing does not soften at elevated temperatures and provides a release surface for high-temperature processing. The silicone adhesive supports high-temperature performance with reduced adhesive transfer, while the tape also provides documented flame-retardant, chemical-resistant, radiation-resistant, dielectric, and mechanical properties.

Key features

  • High-temperature polyimide backing: DuPont™ Kapton® film remains dimensionally stable and does not soften at elevated temperatures.
  • Silicone adhesive: Supports high-temperature processing while helping reduce adhesive transfer during removal.
  • Documented functional performance: Provides flame retardancy, chemical and radiation resistance, and a typical dielectric strength of 7,000 volts.

Applications / Suitable for

  • Masking gold fingers on printed circuit boards during wave soldering
  • Masking gold fingers during solder-dip processing
  • Providing a release surface during fabrication of parts cured at elevated temperatures

General Properties
Adhesive Layer
A layer that is applied to one surface or both to bind items together and resist their separation
Silicone
Color
The color
Amber
Film Thickness
Film thickness is the thickness of a backing film without taking into account any coatings or adhesive layers. It is measured in micron and the conversion factor to mil is 0.039.
0.03 mm
Release Liner
A paper or plastic-based film sheet used to prevent a sticky surface from prematurely adhering
None
Total Thickness
Total thickness is taking into account all the films, coatings, adhesives, release liners and special layers and is the maximum thickness of a film or tape.
70 μm
Mechanical Properties
Elongation
Elongation is the process of lengthening something. It is a percentage that measures the initial, unstressed, length compared to the length of the material right before it breaks. It is commonly referred to as Ultimate Elongation or Tensile Elongation at break.

Electrical Properties
Breakdown Voltage
Breakdown voltage is the minimum voltage necessary to force an insulator to conduct some amount of electricity. It is the point at which a material ceases to be an insulator and becomes a resistor that  conducts electricity at some proportion of the total current.  After dielectric breakdown, the material may or may not behave as an insulator any more because of the molecular structure alteration. The current flow tend to create a localised puncture that totally alters the dielectric properties of the material. This electrical property is thickness dependent and is the maximum amount of voltage that a dielectric material can withstand before breaking down. The breakdown voltage is calculated by multiplying the dielectric strength of the material times the thickness of the film.
