3M 3901

Main features

  • Low-Viscosity Surface Wetting
  • Quick-Drying One-Component Application
  • Improved Metal Corrosion Protection

Product Description

3M Scotch-Weld Metal Primer 3901 is a red, low-viscosity, one-component liquid primer for preparing metal and glass before bonding with compatible 3M Scotch-Weld film and liquid structural adhesives. It wets treated surfaces thoroughly and dries quickly, simplifying application before adhesive placement. The primer helps maintain cleaned surfaces in a relatively oxidation-free condition until bonding is completed. In the bonded interface, it improves adhesion and resistance to environmental exposure while adding corrosion protection on metal. The 3 to 8 cP viscosity supports thin, even coverage for glass and metal assemblies that require controlled primer application and dependable structural-adhesive preparation.

Key features

  • Low-Viscosity Surface Wetting: The 3 to 8 cP liquid spreads readily for complete wetting before adhesive placement.
  • Quick-Drying One-Component Application: The ready-to-use primer simplifies surface preparation without component mixing.
  • Metal Corrosion Protection: The dried primer improves resistance to corrosion and environmental exposure on metal.

Applications

Suitable for priming metal and glass before compatible 3M Scotch-Weld film and liquid structural adhesives.

Physical Properties
Viscosity
Viscosity is a measurement of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Viscosity is commonly measured in centiPoise (cP). One cP is defined as the viscosity of water and all other viscosities are derived from this base. MPa is another common unit with a 1:1 conversion to cP. A product like honey would have a much higher viscosity -around 10,000 cPs- compared to water. As a result, honey would flow much slower out of a tipped glass than water would. The viscosity of a material can be decreased with an increase in temperature in order to better suit an application
