Main features

  • Instant-Adhesion Paint Masking
  • Clean Multiple-Bake Removal
  • Conformable Mini-Crepe Backing

Product Description

3M Paint Masking Tape 231/231A is a tan, smooth mini-crepe paper tape for industrial and aerospace paint masking, including multiple-bake finishing operations. Its rubber adhesive provides instant adhesion and holding power, while the heat-resistant, solvent- and moisture-resistant backing conforms around complex shapes and tears cleanly for efficient application. Typical construction values include 0.19 mm total thickness, 10% elongation at break, and 49 N/cm tensile strength. The tape provides clean removal following a 30-minute exposure at temperatures up to 149 deg C under the stated condition and is suited to painting automobiles, aircraft, trucks, boats, and fabricated parts. Best results are obtained when it is applied and removed within 24 hours.

Key features

  • Instant paint-mask adhesion: The rubber adhesive sticks quickly and resists lifting or curling during supported finishing work.
  • Multiple-bake clean removal: The tape removes cleanly after 30 minutes at temperatures up to 149 deg C under the stated condition.
  • Conformable mini-crepe backing: The smooth backing follows complex shapes, resists bleed-through, and tears cleanly.

Applications

Applications include industrial paint masking, aerospace masking, multiple-bake finishing, and painting automobiles, aircraft, trucks, boats, and fabricated parts.

General Properties
Adhesive Layer
A layer that is applied to one surface or both to bind items together and resist their separation
rubber

Total Thickness
Total thickness is taking into account all the films, coatings, adhesives, release liners and special layers and is the maximum thickness of a film or tape.
190 μm
Mechanical Properties
Adhesion Strength
Adhesion is the bond strength measurement of a coating to a substrate. When an adhesive is bonded to an item or surface, numerous physical, mechanical and chemical forces come into play, which may have an effect on each other.
30.2 Oz/in
Elongation
Elongation is the process of lengthening something. It is a percentage that measures the initial, unstressed, length compared to the length of the material right before it breaks. It is commonly referred to as Ultimate Elongation or Tensile Elongation at break.
