3M 1205

Main features

  • 155 deg C Continuous Operation
  • 6000 V Dielectric Minimum
  • Coil and Solder-Mask Versatility

Product Description

3M Polyimide Film Electrical Tape 1205 is an amber, 0.081 mm polyimide tape with a non-corrosive acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive for electrical insulation and solder masking. Its 0.025 mm film backing provides a thin insulating construction for coils, capacitors, transformers, wire harnesses, lead anchoring, and printed circuit board assembly. The tape is designed for continuous operation not exceeding 155 deg C under its UL listing. ASTM D1000 values include minimum dielectric breakdown of 6000 V, minimum insulation resistance of 1 x 10^12 ohm, and minimum elongation of 50%, with properties measured at 23 deg C unless otherwise stated.

Key features

  • 155 deg C operation: The tape is designed for continuous operation not exceeding 155 deg C under its UL listing.
  • 6000 V dielectric minimum: ASTM D1000 dielectric breakdown is at least 6000 V at 23 deg C.
  • Pressure-sensitive installation: The acrylic adhesive requires no heat, moisture, or solvent preparation for application.

Applications

Applications include wrapping coils, capacitors, transformers, and wire harnesses; anchoring leads; and solder masking during printed circuit board assembly.

Film Thickness
Film thickness is the thickness of a backing film without taking into account any coatings or adhesive layers. It is measured in micron and the conversion factor to mil is 0.039.
0.025 mm
Total Thickness
Total thickness is taking into account all the films, coatings, adhesives, release liners and special layers and is the maximum thickness of a film or tape.
81 μm
Mechanical Properties
Adhesion Strength
Adhesion is the bond strength measurement of a coating to a substrate. When an adhesive is bonded to an item or surface, numerous physical, mechanical and chemical forces come into play, which may have an effect on each other.
20 Oz/in
Elongation
Elongation is the process of lengthening something. It is a percentage that measures the initial, unstressed, length compared to the length of the material right before it breaks. It is commonly referred to as Ultimate Elongation or Tensile Elongation at break.

Electrical Properties
Breakdown Voltage
Breakdown voltage is the minimum voltage necessary to force an insulator to conduct some amount of electricity. It is the point at which a material ceases to be an insulator and becomes a resistor that  conducts electricity at some proportion of the total current.  After dielectric breakdown, the material may or may not behave as an insulator any more because of the molecular structure alteration. The current flow tend to create a localised puncture that totally alters the dielectric properties of the material. This electrical property is thickness dependent and is the maximum amount of voltage that a dielectric material can withstand before breaking down. The breakdown voltage is calculated by multiplying the dielectric strength of the material times the thickness of the film.
